A tense, hard-fought battle at Somerset Park ended all square after a deadlocked first half in which both sides probed without finding a way through.
Josh Cooper fired Dunfermline ahead from a 53rd-minute penalty after the restart, but Ayr United's veteran defender Kevin Holt rose beautifully just five minutes later, in the 58th minute, to hammer home the equaliser and share the spoils.
Neither side could find a late winner as the game stretched, and a point apiece felt about right for two teams who gave everything in a physical, competitive Championship scrap.
